Choosing the right paper GSM is an important step in padded mailer production. It affects material consumption, machine performance and finished packaging quality. However, heavier paper does not automatically provide better protection. The right choice depends on the paper grade, mailer structure and intended application.
What Does Paper GSM Mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre and describes paper grammage, or mass per unit area. For example, 80 GSM means that one square metre of paper weighs 80 grams.
GSM is not the same as thickness or strength. Papers with the same grammage can differ in thickness, stiffness, tensile strength and tear resistance. Always compare technical specifications alongside GSM.
Select Paper for Each Layer
A paper padded mailer may combine an outer layer, a cushioning layer and an inner liner, depending on its construction.
The outer paper needs suitable strength, printability and folding performance. The cushioning paper must work with the selected forming process, such as honeycomb expansion or embossing. Where an inner liner is used, it should support reliable converting and product insertion.
Specify each layer separately rather than using one GSM value to describe the entire mailer.
Match the Material to the Product
Start with the product’s weight, shape and sensitivity to damage. Sharp edges, fragile surfaces and demanding shipping conditions require different protection strategies.
Increasing the outer paper GSM alone may not solve a cushioning problem. Evaluate the complete package, including cushioning structure, seams, closure and usable internal dimensions. Test filled mailers under representative shipping conditions before approving a material combination.
Check Machine Compatibility
Before purchasing paper in bulk, confirm the recommended material specifications with your padded mailer machine supplier.
During trials, check web tracking, tension stability, folding, cutting and adhesive bonding. For embossed cushioning, inspect the formed paper for cracking or crushed areas. Record acceptable output and waste throughout the trial rather than judging only a few finished samples.
Compare Cost per Acceptable Mailer
A lower paper price does not always mean a lower production cost. Include paper consumption, adhesive, rejected bags and production interruptions in your comparison.
As a simple example, reducing a layer from 100 GSM to 90 GSM lowers that layer’s theoretical paper mass by 10% when the area remains unchanged. It does not reduce the total mailer weight or manufacturing cost by 10%.
Choose the lightest validated material combination that meets protection and production requirements.
Confirm Your Paper Specifications Before Production
There is no universal GSM specification for every padded mailer. Approve the paper grade, grammage and layer construction through material trials and finished-package testing.
